San Servolo Asylum Museum. History
Home to an ancient Benedictine monastery and later a female convent, in the 18th century the island of San Servolo became the site of Venice’s military hospital. Only in the 19th century was it transformed into a men’s psychiatric hospital. Today the Museo del Manicomio is a place where you can read about, learn and discover the connection that has united the Venetian community with this part of its territory.
Visiting the Asylum Museum
Treat yourself to a guided tour of San Servolo and let us take you by the hand through hundreds of years of history: you can visit the church with the brilliant paintings by Jacopo Marieschi and the two characteristic bell towers, as well as the ancient 18th century pharmacy which still has the original tools used by the Fatebenefratelli Brothers to prepare medicines.
Visit the museum which tells the story of the medical approach to mental illness over the centuries in a clear, respectful and simple way.
At the end of your visit you’ll be able to enjoy the beautiful garden, having fun discovering the contemporary works of art dotted around it, and take in the fabulous panorama of the San Marco Basin from the island’s viewing points.
Book your visit to the Museo del Manicomio on San Servolo now for an unforgettable experience that lifts the lid on one of the more unique and unusual sides to Venice.
