Doge’s Palace. History
Founded in the 10th century as a fortified castle, the Doge’s Palace was rebuilt in the second half of the 1100s after being partially destroyed by a fire. However, it was only in 1340, under the Doge Gradenigo, that the Palace began to assume its modern-day guise. Over the following centuries other fires and new requirements led to other major reorganisations, the addition of new rooms and, in 1600, new prisons and the famous Bridge of Sighs.
