Natural History Museum. History
Venice’s Natural History Museum is housed in the striking Fontego dei Turchi.
Built in the first half of the 13th century by the Pesaro family, this palazzo gets its name from the Turkish merchants who congregated here between 1621 and 1838: respecting the strict rules imposed by the Serenissima, they lived, traded and prayed in this building. Still one of the most eye-catching and famous buildings on the Grand Canal, it has been the home of the Natural History Museum since 1923.
Visiting Natural History Museum
Do you love science? Have you ever seen a dinosaur close up? Do animals interest you almost as much as the lives of the great explorers? Get ready to be amazed because the Natural History Museum has plenty in store for you.
Here you can admire the skeletons of a blue whale and a sperm whale and listen to their songs, visit the rooms dedicated to the Venetian explorers of the 19th and 20th centuries and observe the reconstruction of a 16th century wunderkammer (cabinet of curiosities).
Before leaving don’t miss the chance to see the amazement in your children’s eyes as they gaze at the majestic dinosaur skeleton over seven metres long and the “tegnùe” aquarium.
The Natural History Museum is the perfect place for the whole family. It will excite, amaze and enchant in equal measure.
