HISTORY
The decision to build a new public clock in the area of St Mark's Square dates back to 1493. A few years later the building was constructed and the mechanism, a masterpiece of technique and engineering, was assembled. At the top were the bronze statues of the Moors.
Compared to the overall layout of the square, which was already ordered on the basis of the series of famous porticoed buildings, the Tower was a great novelty; but its image was destined to change further in the following years, when the two side wings were added, concluded by the double balustraded terrace, and in the mid 18th century, with the elevations of the wings above the terraces and new balustrades.
VISITING THE TOWER
In spite of the heavy tampering carried out in the mid-19th century - work on the clock machine, demolition of the wooden stairs with metal spiral staircases - and a series of modifications that have updated its structure and image, the Clock Tower has always fascinated tourists from all over the world.
It is worth discovering a monument of 16th-century Venice, in a city that never ceases to amaze.
