ORATORY OF THE NUNZIATELLA. HISTORY
The Oratory of the Nunziatella was founded as a sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin Mary in 1489 following a very unique event. According to popular legend, a fresco depicting the Annunciation in the home owned by herbalist Nicolò di Giacomo began to weep, resulting in miracles. The emotion generated by the event and the extraordinary inundation of believers to the site led to the decision to construct a building dedicated to the “Virgin of the Annunciation”. The ancient miraculous image of the Virgin Mary can still be seen today on the altar of the Annunciation in an elegant finely-carved and gilded wooden niche.
VISITING THE ORATORY OF THE NUNZIATELLA
In terms of the artistic decorations, we recommend taking a close look at the Baptism of Christ, a fine work painted between 1497 and 1508 by Pietro Vannucci, also known as il Perugino. The altar of the Deposition, in the sacristy, depicts the Lamentation of Christ. To the left of the group you will see a rocky wall in which the sepulchre opens with Nicodemus and an angel. Now very deteriorated, in the past the fresco has been attributed to Raphael, Lorenzo Lotto and Andrea Mantegna. The work is currently attributed to Benedetto di maestro Gaspare of Pavia, documented in Foligno in 1511.
A trip to the Oratory of the Nunziatella is to revisit the real atmosphere of the Renaissance, surrounded by priceless historic and artistic works. Why don’t you come and see us? When you leave the museum you can discover all the charm of Foligno!
