THE FOUNDATION
The aim of the Foundation is to promote the knowledge of the places of memory of the contemporary age and the search for the historical processes that saw the origin and affirmation in Europe of Fascism and Nazism; of racial, political and religious persecution; of deportation and the reality of concentration and extermination camps; of resistance and liberation struggles.
It is also proposed to deepen the knowledge of local history, both as regards the opposition to Fascism and the struggle for liberation, and the events of deportation in the province of Prato.
In this way the Foundation, also through an intense educational activity aimed at young people, intends to cultivate a historical memory and promote a culture of peace and solidarity between peoples against all kinds of intolerance, racism, discrimination and totalitarianism.
THE MUSEUM
The Museum is located in Prato in the hamlet of Figline. The place is dear to the memory of the citizens because here on 6th September 1944, the same day of the liberation of the city from Nazi-Fascism, 29 young partisans of the Buricchi Brigade, who had come down to the valley from the nearby mountain village of Faggi di Iavello, were taken by the retreating Germans and hanged. Only in 2003 did the investigation lead to the identification of the perpetrator of the massacre, the Wehrmacht Major Karl Laqua.
To commemorate this tragic event, every year on the anniversary of the Liberation, a torchlight procession is organised from the nearby Via 7 Marzo to the Figline hill and the site of the massacre. Many citizens and representatives of the institutions take part in the torchlight procession.
