Palazzo Pretorio is an austere and imposing palace, dominating the Piazza del Comune, in the historic center of Prato.
The Palace was founded at the end of the thirteenth century, it has a troubled history behind it: continuous remodeling, different functions of the spaces over the centuries, abandonment and almost demolition in the mid-nineteenth century, and finally the twentieth-century restoration and the opening of the Museum.

Accessibility
- The site is partially wheelchair accessible: the terrace is not accessible.
- In a room located on the half floor of the second level there is a "Baby Pit Stop" area for breastfeeding and baby-changing table.
The visit begins on the second floor where you can admire the room dedicated to the Sacra Cintola, Bernardo Daddi, Agnolo Gaddi and other authors of the late fourteenth century. The large salon contains the most important works of the Museum: the great late-Gothic polyptychs, including the splendid altar machine by Giovanni da Milano, and the great works by Filippo Lippi and the Officina Pratese. Another room is dedicated to Filippino Lippi, the greatest of Prato's painters and other artists of the late fifteenth and early sixteenth century, such as Botticini, Raffaellino del Garbo and Luca Signorelli. The last room houses valuable examples of Renaissance sculpture including an admirable piece by Donatello.
On the second floor you will find the large hall dedicated to a selection of large paintings of the 16th-18th centuries coming mainly from the churches and monasteries of the city, including works by Poppi, Mario Balassi and Domenico Ferretti, as well as the three beautiful paintings of Saints by Tito and Alessandro Allori, which the Museum acquired in 2012 thanks to the testamentary donation of Angela Riblet. The other rooms are dedicated to 16th and 17th century painting, with works by Giovan Maria Butteri, Giovan Battista Naldini, Battistello Caracciolo, Cecco Bravo, Mattia Preti and Nicola Malinconico.
In the large hall on the third floor you will find the important nucleus of Bartolini's works: models of sculptures, including the Trust in God, busts and portraits in marble and plaster. There is also a selection of paintings by authors of the nineteenth century, including Von Sturler and Luigi Mussini and Antonio Marini from Prato. The twentieth century is represented by Ardengo Soffici and some painters of the School of Prato. A specific space contains seven works by Jacques Lipchitz: selected from the nucleus of 21 plaster sculptures and 43 drawings donated to the City of Prato by the foundation that takes his name, they illustrate the entire artistic career of the great artist of Lithuanian origin.
Come and discover the innovative exhibition of the Palazzo Pretorio Museum. A unique journey to discover Tuscan art is waiting for you.
