Located near the Arena Amphitheatre, in the impressive courtyard in front of the pronaos of the Philharmonic Theatre.
One of the first public museums established in Europe, it houses an important collection of artefacts, mostly inscriptions, from different civilisations and historical periods (Egyptian, Greek, Etruscan, Roman, Ancient Venetic, Medieval, Arab and Jewish). Most of the collection was assembled by the great 18th-century scholar Scipione Maffei, one of the leading figures of the Italian Enlightenment.
