Juliet’s House, renowned as the symbolic setting of Shakespeare’s tragedy Romeo and Juliet and an emblem of romantic love, is housed in a medieval building that may have been the residence of the Dal Cappello family as early as the 13th century. The family gave its name to the street, and its coat of arms is carved on the inner arch of the courtyard.
Over the centuries, the entire complex passed through the hands of several owners and underwent numerous restoration and renovation works. In particular, in 1939–1940, the façade of the house overlooking the garden was altered and the balcony was added. During the same period, the interiors were redesigned and the walls decorated with medieval-style ornamental motifs. In the early 1970s, Nereo Costantini’s statue of Juliet was placed in the courtyard, and on 1 June 1973, Juliet’s House opened to the public.
