Housed in an imposing and extensive 14th-century castle, which has undergone several alterations over the centuries, the museum has been the setting for major historical events, some of national significance.
It features an exhibition layout designed by the renowned Venetian architect Carlo Scarpa, who was responsible in particular for the striking Gallery housing the outstanding collection of medieval sculptures. The museum also boasts an important collection of Renaissance sculptures and an extensive Picture Gallery, with works from the Veronese school as well as by Bellini, Mantegna and Rubens. The adjacent garden is home to the Arco dei Gavi, an important monument dating from the Roman period. The museum also houses scientific archives and a specialised library.
