HISTORY
In 1628, when it appeared in Parma to inaugurate the Teatro dei Farnese, the opera was a show reserved for a select few and its aim was to celebrate in the richest and most memorable way a particular event linked to the ruling dynasty.
Just then, however, the conditions were maturing for that rare and exclusive show to become a public event and the most successful kind of show for the next three hundred years.
Even Parma, after the sumptuous opening of the Teatro dei Farnese, would adapt to the common trend, with the construction of public theatres, the Teatro Ducale in 1687 and the Nuovo Teatro Ducale, today's Teatro Regio, in 1829.
VISITING THE MUSEUM
The Museum takes its cue from the tradition of Parma to retrace four centuries of the history of opera theatre, through the themes and protagonists that have marked its path from its origins to the present day.
Dedicated to a wide audience, the Museum integrates the exhibition of documents of the past (objects, posters, photographs) mostly coming from the Historical Archive of the Teatro Regio, with a system for the audiovisual enjoyment of specially made products.
