“Pietro Doderlein” zoological museum. History
The Doderlein Museum is a highly-respected institution of scientific research and dissemination which dates to the second half of the 19th century. Dedicated to Professor Pietro Doderlein, who founded it in 1862, the institute has played a frontline role in collating, conserving and taking care of relics of all species and still has a valuable archive of Mediterranean biodiversity today. After a long period of closure it was reopened to the public in 2009.
Visiting the Doderlein Museum
A visit to the museum will enable you to relive the atmosphere that the academics of the second half of the 19th century studied in, the original furnishings and layout still maintaining all of their charm. But it is the animals that really capture your attention at the zoological museum of Palermo with thousands of examples of invertebrates and vertebrates that tell hundreds of unique and fascinating stories.
For example, there are 200 mammals from different regions of Europe, Asia, Africa and America. Not to mention the collection of Mediterranean fish, conserved using a special secret chemical treatment which has preserved their physical and aesthetic features.
These are just some of the highlights waiting for you at the “Pietro Doderlein” zoological museum, the perfect haven for young and old animal lovers alike.
At the museum you can also purchase a ticket which includes a visit to the beautiful Botanical Gardens nearby to complete your day immersed among the wonders of nature. We look forward to seeing you!
