HISTORY OF THE BOTANICAL GARDENS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF PALERMO
The Botanical Gardens is an institution of the University of Palermo which dates to 1789.
The most distinctive aspect of this wonderful garden, which borders the historic Villa Giulia, is its vast range of species which, dominated by Mediterranean, tropical and subtropical plants, has been integrated over time with many types of exotic flowers. Over the years the gardens have undergone numerous extensions, resulting in the current size of around 10 hectares, reached in 1906.
VISITING THE BOTANICAL GARDEN OF PALERMO
The Botanical Gardens of Palermo will amaze you not only for its wealth of plants but also for the size of some of them, genuine monuments of nature. Take a walk among the magnolias, cotton trees, giant bamboos, papayas and the many other plant species which are alternated with old statues and monumental bas-reliefs.
Breathe in the results of over 200 years of research, which has made it possible to propagate innumerable plant varieties in Sicily, Europe and the entire Mediterranean basin, thanks also to the climatic conditions of Palermo, and which make these gardens an integral part of your trip to the city.
Whether you are on your own or with the family, a trip to the Botanical Gardens of Palermo will leave you feeling good about the world again!
