HISTORICAL NOTES
The Salinas Museum is located in the architectural complex of the congregation of the Oratorian Fathers of Olivella, dating to the 17th century. The building also includes the church of Sant’Ignazio and the Oratory of San Filippo Neri. Formed in 1814 as the University museum, it became a national museum in 1860.
Over time the building has undergone various modernisation and restoration works to restore its original beauty and it was recently reopened in 2016.
VISITING THE "ANTONINO SALINAS" REGIONAL ARCHAEOLOGY MUSEUM
A trip to the museum is a unique opportunity to observe archaeological artefacts from the Prehistoric, Phoenician, Etruscan, Greek and Roman periods documenting the various civilisations of Sicily.
You can admire over 6,000 books, manuscripts, photos, prints, coins and personal belongings.
The centrepiece of the exhibition is the room that for over 500 years has hosted the famous metopes of the Selinunte Temples, among the most important examples of Greek sculpture in the West, today enriched with a selection of architectural terracottas which have maintained the vivacity of their original colours.
The Salinas archaeology museum is the best place to begin your tour of Palermo. Between its walls you will learn to love the charm of Sicily and from here your journey can continue on to other compelling sites.
