Opened in December 2008, it is one of the most important museums in Italy and among the leading institutions in Europe for the knowledge and study of Oriental art.
It is housed in the historic Palazzo Mazzonis, a monumental 17th–18th century building that underwent a refined and meticulous restoration, enhancing its original structures and decorations while allowing for the optimal display of the Museum’s works.

It offers a broad overview of the art of ancient Asian cultures. The galleries, arranged across the building’s four floors, display works from South and Southeast Asia (the Indian subcontinent and the Indochinese peninsula), the most important collection of Chinese funerary art in Italy covering the period from the Neolithic age to the Tang dynasty (7th–10th century AD), religious and secular Japanese artworks, art from the Himalayan region (Tibet, Nepal, and Bhutan), and a significant collection of Islamic art.
On the ground floor, alongside the evocative Japanese gardens, there is also a space dedicated to temporary exhibitions.
