VISITING THE VILLA
The entrance is on the Appian Way and from here you will access a residence that in terms of dimensions was second only to Hadrian’s Villa.
It was built in the 2nd century A.D. by the Quintili brothers, consuls and rich landowners who Commodus later accused of conspiracy, confiscating all their possessions.
The Emperor loved staying here for long periods because, as the Greek Olympiodorus wrote, “the villa has everything that you would find in a medium-sized city”. And you couldn’t really argue. There was a hall for banquets, a nymphaeum, a hippodrome and the baths, 14 metres high with large windows and multicoloured marbles.
Located on high ground, the villa was ventilated during the sticky Roman summers and warmed during the winter via terra cotta pipes inserted in the walls that conveyed preheated air.
By accessing Villa dei Quintili it is also possible to visit the site of Santa Maria Nova.
A visit to Villa dei Quintili will be a walk that expands your knowledge of a city that remains infinite in time and space. Find out about our guided tours.
Also, don’t forget that Villa dei Quintili, the Mausoleum of Caecilia Metella, Capo di Bove, the Tombs of Via Latina, Sette Bassi and the Antiquarium of Lucrezia Romana are part of the new Appian Way Regional Park.
