Founded in 1842 for arboriculture experiments by Bartolomeo Biasoletto, who also transferred the rarest species from his old Pharmaceutical Garden to a section of the site. It was later expanded by Muzio de'Tommasini and opened to the public in 1873. In 1903, it became a public institution. After a long period of closure, it reopened in 2001 with new spaces and educational goals.
