Now a National Monument and a place of remembrance, the Risiera di San Sabba powerfully recounts a tragic chapter of 20th-century history.
Originally built as a rice husking factory, during the Nazi occupation it became the only concentration camp in Italy with a crematorium. Established as a "rice mill" in the late 1800s, it was later designated by the Nazis as a Polizeihaftlager (police detention camp) to serve three main purposes: the elimination of hostages and prisoners, the sorting of deportees, and the storage of looted goods. The site was recognized as a National Monument in 1965 and became a Civic Museum in 1975, welcoming over 130,000 visitors annually.
