HISTORY
The Royal Palace of Naples was built on the orders of viceroy Fernando Ruiz de Castro, Count of Lemos, according to designs by Domenico Fontana in 1600. The design was enriched in the 18th century thanks to Luigi Vanvitelli who, because of static problems, decided to alternately close the arches of the facade.
Following a terrible fire, in 1837 the Palace was restored by Gaetano Genovese who remodelled the grand staircase already built by Francesco Antonio Picchiatti. Following the Unification of Italy it became the home of the Princes of Piedmont and in 1919 it was sold to the State on the orders of Victor Emmanuel III of Savoy.
