The Museum Complex of Palazzo Ducale in Mantua, with its 34,000 square meters of surface, is a unique testimony of the history of the city of Mantua, of the Italian Renaissance and of European art between the Middle Ages and the Baroque.
It originates from the progressive aggregation of a series of autonomous buildings. The first nucleus dates back to the end of the thirteenth century and is due to the Bonacolsi family, but its history substantially coincides with the fortune of the Gonzaga family, who ruled Mantua from 1328 to 1707. The palace also bears the signs of the eighteenth-century government of the Habsburgs.
