The Foiba of Basovizza, designated a National Monument since 1992, is a place that challenges our conscience and collective memory.
Once a mining shaft originally over 250 meters deep, it has become the main memorial and symbol of the tragedy of the foibe and the Julian-Dalmatian exodus: a silence that still speaks.

Accessibility
-
The site is accessible to visitors with disabilities: there is an elevator to reach the upper floor. It is not very spacious, but a wheelchair is available on-site in case the visitor’s own wheelchair does not fit.
Please note: there are no chairs or benches along the visiting route.
-
In May 1945, the site became the scene of summary executions of Italian civilians and soldiers: here, at the hands of the occupying Titoist troops, several hundred Italians lost their lives, while many deportees perished in Yugoslav concentration camps.
VISIT ROUTE – AT A GLANCE
Begin at the Foiba of Basovizza, where silence speaks and memory becomes tangible. A metal covering now seals the slab that once closed the shaft, while a scaffold topped with a cross recalls the distinctive hoist once used for exploring the foibe. Then proceed to the Documentation Center, passionately managed by the Lega Nazionale, where you can explore news, images, and in-depth insights.
NOT TO BE MISSED
The site invites deep reflection, enriched by the historical analysis provided by the Documentation Center—an institution capable of giving voice to silence.
