The Castle of Julius II, located in the Borgo di Ostia Antica, was built in 1483 by the Florentine architect Baccio Pontelli, commissioned by Cardinal Giuliano della Rovere (Pope Julius II, 1503-1513).
The castle represents a great example of Renaissance military architecture.
The complex includes a perimeter circuit of casemates (firing chambers) that connects three towers (one of which incorporated the Martin V tower), a 'ravelin' and a large surrounding moat.
The siege of the Duke of Alba (1556), the flood that diverted the course of the Tiber (1557) and the formation of malarial swamps caused the decline of the castle and the abandonment of the village.
The Park will create a new museum layout of the monument, which will host a Museum of the Ostiense territory.
