NATIONAL ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM OF ALTAMURA. THE VISIT
Opened to the public in 1997, the museum occupies two floors of a modern building. The exhibition offers a broad panorama of the civilisations that have succeeded one another in the Alta Murgia thanks to artefacts found in the entire surrounding area between the middle of the 20th century and the present day.
Must-see displays include the extraordinary and ultra-realistic model of the Altamura Man, produced thanks to a combination of the molecular and morphological studies conducted on the fossilised skeleton excavated from Lamalunga Cave in 1993. Also well worth a look is the permanent “Prehistory of food. The origins of bread” exhibition which explores the farming tradition of the local area that lives on today in the famous Altamura Bread DOP.
The Altamura National Archaeological Museum is a mandatory stop-off for those that want to discover the charm of this part of Puglia.
Don’t forget to visit the other sites of the “Altamura Man” network: Lamalunga Visitor Centre and Palazzo Baldassarre.
