The St. Patrick's Well was constructed in the 16th century, designed by Antonio da Sangallo. It was commissioned by Pope Clement VII, who sought refuge in Orvieto during the Sack of Rome in 1527.
We are on the famous Cliff of Orvieto. From the area of the well, one can enjoy a view that stretches towards the valley crossed by the Paglia river and the hills separating Orvieto from Todi. To reach the bottom, located 54 meters deep, one descends 248 steps. Near the well are the remains of the famous Etruscan temple of Belvedere and the Albornoz Fortress, today a public garden. The ticket office is next to the terminal of the upper station of the funicular, connected to the free parking at the base of the cliff. Book your visit to St. Patrick's Well now and discover a masterpiece of Renaissance engineering!
