The project for Palazzo Volpi was entrusted to the architect Sergio Venturi. It served as a family residence until the mid-19th century, after which it was purchased by the state and designated as a courthouse. The adaptation work to accommodate the art gallery took place between 1970 and 1986, and in 1989, the first section dedicated to 14th-century frescoes from the Monastery of Santa Margherita was opened to the public.
The tour begins on the ground floor with the medieval wing and continues with the Renaissance section. The first floor houses the temporary exhibition and the historical painting gallery. The tour then proceeds to the second and final floor, which is dedicated to 20th-century art.
