The Suburban Baths are a Roman-era thermal complex buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD; they were discovered following the 20th-century archaeological excavation campaigns of ancient Herculaneum.
Built in the early 1st century at the behest of Marcus Nonius Balbus as a gift to the city, they are among the best-preserved thermal buildings of their kind in the entire Roman Empire. Following the delicate first phase of safety and restoration work—preparatory to a future permanent reopening—the first fascinating rooms to undergo these interventions are now reopening as part of the Suburban Baths of Herculaneum Tour project.
