HISTORY
In the 1960s it was decided that the original Public Health Office, dating to 1929, would be demolished and rebuilt in reinforced concrete and glass but the project was never finished and the gutted building was a notable feature of this stretch of road for decades. Thanks to a major redevelopment project, in 2018 this “urban void” was filled with the opening of the new Palazzo Merulana.
Since 2014 the Elena and Claudio Cerasi Foundation has boasted a collection of modern and contemporary art which in terms of its composition and breadth is an authentic snapshot of Italian 20th century art. The 1,800 m2 space at Palazzo Merulana is now the permanent home of over 90 works.
VISITING THE PALAZZO
Here the spaces are specifically organised to display works of art and host cultural events, shows, books presentations and meetings with personalities from the contemporary world.
You will begin your visit on the ground floor with the works of Antonietta Raphael and Ceroli, Fontana and Penone. On the second floor you’ll find De Chirico, Balla, Capogrossi, Severini and Cambellotti, to name just a few, while on the third floor there is a gallery for temporary exhibitions. Before leaving don’t forget to head up to the loft, dedicated to cultural activities and culinary events, and its splendid terrace, from where you can enjoy a unique view of the rooftops and domes of Rome.
Palazzo Merulana is a treasure trove rich in wonderful works of contemporary art, but also a space where you can relax and enjoy some downtime away from the bustle of the city. What are you waiting for? Come and visit us!
