Within the Archive are preserved documents produced and received by Gallipoli’s local administration from the early 1800s to 1970. Documentation from before 1800 is instead kept at the State Archive of Lecce.
The archive is divided into three sections: pre-unification, post-unification, and the civil registry archive. Over time, archival collections from suppressed entities or received by the municipality on deposit have been added—referred to as aggregated archives—which include the Archive of Conciliation, the Cadastre Archive, and the Villaggio del Fanciullo.
The most valuable documents pertain to the deliberations of the decurionate, the ancient cadastre, records concerning territory and heritage, brotherhoods and confraternities, customs, P.N.F., war records, roads, public lighting, the aqueduct and public fountain, the public clock, the post office, the railway, restorations of the Dominican Convent, the Library and Museum, the Municipal Tonnara, the fish market and covered market, the port, and much more.
