The collections of 14th-century and Renaissance paintings feature some of the most absolute masterpieces in the history of art. It is enough to mention the names of Giotto, Simone Martini, Piero della Francesca, Fra Angelico, Filippo Lippi, Botticelli, Mantegna, Correggio, Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Michelangelo, and Caravaggio. These are displayed alongside masterpieces of European painting, with a significant representation of German, Dutch, and Flemish works. Of equal importance to Italy's artistic heritage is the Medici family's collection of ancient statues and busts. This collection adorns the Gallery's corridors and includes ancient Roman sculptures, many of which are copies of lost Greek originals.
