The Dicastery for Culture and Education presents, at the 61st International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, the Holy See Pavilion The Ear is the Eye of the Soul, curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist and Ben Vickers in collaboration with Soundwalk Collective.
Inspired by the life and legacy of Saint Hildegard of Bingen (1098–1179), the Pavilion takes the form of a sonic prayer and responds to Koyo Kouoh’s curatorial invitation to slow down and attune to quieter registers, as a call to the contemplative act of listening.
The Pavilion unfolds across two sites in Venice: the Giardino Mistico dei Carmelitani Scalzi, a monastic garden cared for by the Discalced Carmelite community since the seventeenth century, where listening becomes the primary act; and the Complesso di Santa Maria Ausiliatrice, where the project extends into a contemporary scriptorium and living archive, as space for study and reflection, including the 12 stations for Hildegard of Bingen, by Alexander Kluge.
