Guided Tour with Assisted Route
The assisted guided tours have been designed for all visitors who, due to necessity or preference, cannot or do not wish to use the stairs that characterize the Passetto route and its connection to the interior of Castel Sant’Angelo. This itinerary does not include a visit to the San Marco Bastion but allows visitors to experience the Passetto, both internally and externally, along almost its entire path.
The tour can accommodate up to 20 participants, with a maximum of 5 visitors using wheelchairs. For those using a manual wheelchair, the presence of an accompanying person is mandatory; this companion will be granted free admission.
Entry is through the Torre del Mascherino, in Piazza della Città Leonina, via an entrance door that is 90 cm wide. A short path, approximately 85 cm wide, with a right-angle turn, leads to the lifting platform.
The lift has an entrance width of 80 cm, a cabin width of 120 cm, and a depth of 125 cm. With an average travel time of 1 minute and 17 seconds, it allows visitors to reach the uncovered level of the Passetto, offering a view of St. Peter’s colonnade.
The guided tour will then continue towards Castel Sant’Angelo along the external walkway for approximately 450 meters, leading to the next elevator.
The paving of the external walkway is not perfectly flat but features a slightly arched shape with slopes towards the outer edges to facilitate water drainage.
The second lift has an entrance width of 80 cm, a cabin width of 110 cm, and a depth of 140 cm. In about 35 seconds, it takes visitors down to the lower level, where the covered corridor begins.
From this point, visitors will retrace their steps toward the Vatican through the entire covered corridor, back to the tower where the visit started.
This is a narrow corridor with a variable width ranging from a maximum of 215 cm to a minimum of 75 cm. The sections with the minimum width are short, and on average, the path maintains a width of approximately 83/85 cm.
Although the tour is not recommended for those suffering from claustrophobia, it is important to note that the corridor has a minimum height of 240 cm throughout, with small openings along the walkway providing light and ventilation.
The flooring is not perfectly level and features some slight variations in elevation, particularly towards the final section near the Torre del Mascherino.
The total distance to be covered in the corridor is 450 meters.
Upon arrival at the Torre del Mascherino, visitors will reach the exit—coinciding with the starting point of the tour—by using the same elevator as before.
Considering that this guided tour does not include the San Marco Bastion or the final section of the Passetto near Castel Sant’Angelo, the ticket price is reduced compared to standard guided tours.
This tour has been designed in collaboration with FISH (Italian Federation for the Rights of People with Disabilities and Families).
