The Museum and Pinacoteca of Todi can be found in one of Italy’s most beautiful squares, the political and religious hub of the city. Located on the top floor of the Palazzo del Podestà and the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo, it is the most representative museum of the little Umbrian municipality.
Founded in 1871, the museum will outline the long history of one of Central Italy’s most charming and endearing towns, a must-see for its unique and evocative beauty.

MUSEUM AND PINACOTECA OF TODI. HISTORY OF THE PALAZZO
The Museum and Pinacoteca of Todi is located on the top floor of the Palazzo del Podestà and the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo, united by a staircase in the 17th century.
Work began on Palazzo del Podestà, also known as Palazzo del Comune, in 1213 following the model of the municipal palaces of northern Italy. Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo dates to 1293 with the building finally completed in 1301. The municipal museum of Todi was opened in 1871 and was initially located in the Sala del Capitano, today the Sala del Consiglio. Reorganised and reopened to the public in 1997, its structured exhibition begins with the “city museum” before moving onto five themed sections.
VISITING THE MUSEUM AND PINACOTECA OF TODI
Todi Museum is comprehensive, full of different sections and a place that anyone who wants to visit this famous Umbria town in full must see.
You will begin your visit with the City Museum where you will admire a precious slab of marble dating to the 10th – 11th century and depicting St. Fortunatus, Christ the Redeemer and St. Cassian, a wooden model of the Santa Maria della Consolazione from 1571 and the saddle of Anita Garibaldi.
When you are good and ready you will then move on to see the five other sections. In the Archaeology section you can admire antique Attican ceramics, architectural terra cottas and votive bronze statuettes. In the Coins section you’ll be able to feast your eyes on 1,475 examples of pre-Roman, Greek, Roman, Ostrogoth, byzantine, medieval and modern coins. The Fabrics section includes fine sacred vestments and handicrafts from various eras and places. The Ceramics section has crockery from between the 8th and 18th centuries and is housed in a beautiful room with decorations from different periods, spanning from the early 1600s to the 1900s. Last but not least, the Pinacoteca, where you will finish in style by admiring the altarpiece by Giovanni di Pietro, known as “lo Spagna” (a disciple of Perugino), with the Coronation of the Virgin and many other notable works.
If you are looking for a place steeped in history make sure you visit the Museo Pinacoteca of Todi. We look forward to seeing you in the heart of Umbria so we can help you discover it.
