A journey into international contemporary sculpture: discovering the craftsmanship of local artisans and the profound relationship between artist and technician, from the initial creative spark to the final masterpiece.
Since 1984, the former convent of Sant’Agostino has been home to the Museo dei Bozzetti (Museum of Sketches). Named after Pierluigi Gherardi, a visionary cultural director, the museum stands as a testament to his dedication to the arts. A series of exhibitions held between 1975 and 1981 paved the way for the institution's founding; during this period, many artists working in Pietrasanta began donating their works, laying the foundation for a permanent collection.

Today, the museum showcases the work of over 350 Italian and international artists, featuring a collection of approximately 1,000 sketches and maquettes. The bozzetti (sketches) are small-scale preparatory studies, while the modelli (maquettes) are full-scale (1:1) representations of the final sculptures.
The collection is organised into several sections across the ground and first floors, beginning with the Loggiato dei Modelli (the Maquettes Loggia). The exhibition route also extends to Palazzo Panichi, a secondary venue that hosts curated thematic exhibitions.
