Colosseum. Flavian Amphitheatre

Roma
Monuments

The construction of the largest amphitheater of the Roman Empire was started by Vespasian in 72 AD. This building was planned to change the relationship between power and people from then on: entertainment and distraction offered to the populace for free. It was used for gladiator fights and hunting simulations involving ferocious and exotic animals. The capacity is estimated around 70.000 people; the shows became occasions to impress and control the people through an unforeseen display of astonishing special effects. Today it is possible to visit and understand how the underground theatrical system worked, with hoists, ramps and trapdoors, in order to present the animals, gladiators and scenery machineries to an overwhelmed crowd. Find out the unbelievable engineering techniques that allowed ancient Romans to complete this massive structure, that has reached us today, in less than 10 years.

NEWS
EXTRAORDINARY OPENING for additional times of the colosseum underground for october
We hereby inform you that,
after verifying the validity of the purchases made for the entire availability of tickets for the ordinary entrance of the underground of the Coliseum in October, although not in accordance with the gradual release procedure established, in agreement with the Direction of the Coliseum Archaeological Park, on Monday 9 September at 18:30 an exceptional slot will be offered for sale, available at 17:00 from October 1st to October 26th.
At the same time, tickets will also be released for the English tour "Luna sul Colosseo. The gladiator's dream" at 20:20, for the entire month of October.

NOTICE: monthly opening october arena and underground colosseum
Due to technical problems, tickets with scheduled entrance time for the Colosseum Arena and the Underground Tour in monthly availability for the month of October have already been put on sale.
We therefore advise that, on Tuesday 3rd September at 6.30 pm, no further entries will be issued for monthly availability of the Colosseum Arena and on Thursday 5th September at 6.30 pm will not be issued other tickets for monthly availability of the Underground Tour.
The scheduled openings for September 3rd at 6.30 pm for the tickets with entrance time for the ordinary access of the Colosseum in monthly availability of October and for Thursday 5th September at 6.30 pm for the Underground Tour of November and December in quarterly availability remain unchanged.

  • Colosseum: from 15 July, privileged entry for visitors accompanied by their own tour guide available through the Stern entrance. Beginning on Monday, 15 July, all individual visitors accompanied by their own tour guide, up to a maximum of 13 people, will be able to take advantage of a dedicated access to the Colosseum through the Stern entrance. Tour guides and their groups can use the booking procedures already in place for ordinary entry to the monument and will be asked to present a list of all group members. They will then have access to a special entrance and itinerary meant to facilitate visits and improve visitor inflow at the Piazza del Colosseo entrance. On-site staff will be available to provide logistical support to tour guides, who will be free to lead their groups through all areas of the monument normally open to the public, with the exception of the arena floor.

  • Please note that the free guide ticket for the arena access can now only be booked through the call center. It is confirmed that it is possible to book - also online- the free guide ticket of the underground of the Colosseum.

  • We inform you that until a later date visiting of the fourth and fifth orders will not be allowed due to maintenance work.

  • We hereby inform you that, for a better management of the access flows to the Colosseum, the following changes will be made with immediate effect to the accesses at the ticket offices of the Colosseum Archaeological Park:
    - Inside the Colosseum, in order to avoid the outgoing passage at the metal detectors, through which it is possible to enter only, any integration of tickets for groups will be made at the ticket office of the Arch of Titus. The payment methods accepted will be voucher exchange and credit card (no cash).
Reserved groups and individuals with their own guide who need to add free or full tickets, depending on the availability of remaining tickets, will have priority at this ticket office over individuals with a reservation.
    - The licensed guides who need to collect their free nominal entrance ticket will have a priority reservation desk at the ticket office of Venere e Roma (Desk 5) and one inside the Colosseum (Desk 10). The latter will be available only to those who have already entered with their customers and must pick up the free guide ticket.
Guides and tour leaders must enter together with the visitors already in possession of a ticket and can only leave through the exit, not against the direction of the flow coming from the entrance. This measure is due to safety reasons, since inside the Colosseum it is not possible to pass through the metal detectors in opposite direction.
At the entrance of Salara Vecchia and Arco di Tito, priority access for security checks and to the turnstile will be given to guides already in possession of tickets, as well as to other entitled categories (disabled people and pregnant women).
Groups and individuals that have been mediated by the tourism industry (T.O., Travel Agencies, Guides) and are in possession of a cumulative ticket, must always be accompanied by a qualified guide or tour leader both inside the Colosseum and inside the Forum/Palatine, unless the intermediary is able to provide each customer with their own entrance ticket.

For clarity reasons, it is specified below how the "special" desks operate:
Colosseum desk 10: priority row for licensed guides that need to exchange vouchers and bookings, withdrawal of free guides ticket and integration of any free tickets related to tickets purchased online, under 13 pax. The guide/tour leader and visitors, once the tickets have been collected, must enter through the turnstile.

Arch of Titus desk 5: priority row for licensed guides that need to exchange vouchers and bookings, withdrawal of free guides ticket and integration of any free tickets related to tickets purchased online.
At this desk it is possible to buy, for the first available time, up to a maximum of 13 tickets by paying with credit card.

Largo Salara Vecchia desk 3: priority row for licensed guides that need to exchange vouchers and bookings, withdrawal of free guides ticket and integration of any free tickets related to tickets purchased online. Desk 2 will be dedicated to individuals with a reservation without a guide and Desk 1 to individuals with no reservation. Therefore, guides who wish to purchase up to a maximum of 13 tickets can do so, depending on the availability, by queuing (not priority) at cash 1.
