Rome, in its three-thousand-year history, has continually needed building material.
This is where the story of the Cava Romana dell'Appia Antica begins, the only site of its kind in Rome that can be travelled to 1.5 km, with a large and pleasant emotional impact in safety.
Tuff and pozzolana, initially quarried within the city walls, soon ran out of limited supplies and so the ancient fossores, slaves employed to extract the underground material, began to build huge quarry installations outside the city, along consular roads such as the Appia Antica.
Gradually, all the hillsides were eroded by the Roman quarries, used for the extraction of pozzolana, a fundamental element for making concrete, with which the buildings of the city were erected.
The extensive underground areas, which stretch for several kilometres, have undergone significant reuse over the course of time.
In ancient times they became catacombs. In modern times, however, the tunnels have been used as mushroom farms for the cultivation of Pleus or the more common Champignons."
