VISIT TO THE THARROS ARCHEOLOGICAL AREA
The city of Tharros was founded towards the end of the 8th century B.C. and abandoned around 1050 A.D. to create Aristiane, modern-day Oristano. The archaeological area is located at the extreme south of the Sinis Peninsula, in Cabras, in an area that was inhabited as early as the Nuragic age and regarded as one of the most important in Sardinia in the Punic-Roman and Byzantine ages.
The ruins date mainly to the Roman age. The most interesting structures include the baths, the foundations of the temple and a part of the residential area with homes and craft workshops.
From the Phoenician age there are two necropolises and the tophet, the cemeteries where the urns containing the ashes of sacrificial babies and animals were kept. On the hill of Su Murru Mannu (“large face” in Sardinian) you will find the oldest relics in the area: the remains of the Nuragic village abandoned before the arrival of the Phoenicians.
Walking through Tharros archaeological area is like stepping back in time. Put on a pair of comfortable shoes, grab your camera and immerse yourself in a full-on experience that will captivate you from dawn to dusk.
From here you can continue your tour by visiting the Torre Spagnola of San Giovanni and the Museo Civico Giovanni Marongiu in Cabras.
