TERRAZZA AND CHIOSTRO DELLE LUCREZIE IN TODI. A LITTLE HISTORY
The story of the Monastero delle Lucrezie begins in the first half of the 15th century when a noblewoman of the March of Ancona, Madonna Lucrezia della Genga, bequeathed a building located close to Todi’s city walls to the Franciscan Sisters. Within a few years the complex had expanded with the acquisition of various adjacent properties, enjoying a period of prosperity that was unaffected by the landslides that hit the area around 1760 and, later on, the suppression of religious corporations in 1862.
Following the consolidation of the hill of Todi, at the end of last century the entire structure, now belonging to the municipality, underwent restoration. The Museo del Lapidario - the Stone Museum - is housed today in the former church of San Giovanni Battista and two adjacent properties.
VISITING THE TERRAZZA AND CHIOSTRO DELLE LUCREZIE- MUSEO LAPIDARIO
An absorbing museum, a theatre, a church and a former convent around a terraced cloister: this is what you can expect when you visit the Museo lapidario of Todi today.
The museum exhibition consists of multiple sections that follow the chronological order of the pieces, spanning from the Roman age through to the 19th century. Ancient, medieval and modern materials found over the centuries in the city and surrounding area. Also forming part of the complex is the magnificent “Nido dell’Aquila” theatre. Once here you can take in the wonderful view over the Tiber Valley towards Orvieto.
