It was founded in 1233 at the behest of Frederick II of Swabia. In the sixteenth century, with the invention of gunpowder, the original nucleus, with a quadrangular layout with corner towers, was adapted to the new defensive techniques, providing for the construction of two bastions.
In the Renaissance period, another structure was built to delimit the main central courtyard, the so-called 'Casematte'.
In the 19th century it became a prison until 1974, the year in which it was handed over to the Ministry of Education, now the Ministry of Culture, which oversaw the restoration and museum building.
