Located in the former Palazzo Reale in Piazza San Marco and comprising the Ala Napoleonica and the Procuratie Nuove, the Museo Correr could easily be named instead the Museum of History and Venetian Tradition. Founded on the collection that Teodoro Correr left to the city in 1830, it presents the visitor with a variety of offerings: from the Neoclassical rooms, with important sculptures by Antonio Canova, and the Appartamenti Reali Austriaci to historical collections focused on the institutions, events and daily life of the city, as well as the picture gallery, one of the richest and most stimulating surveys of Venetian painting, ranging from the origins to the early sixteenth century and including works by Lorenzo Veneziano, the Bellini, Carpaccio, Cosmè Tura, Antonello da Messina and Lorenzo Lotto, displayed in a distinctive setting designed by Carlo Scarpa.
The scholarly institutions annexed to the Museum are of fundamental importance: the Biblioteca d'Arte e Storia Veneziana, with a rich collection of codices and archival documents, the celebrated Gabinetto di Stampe e Disegni, the Archivio Fotografico and the Centro per la catalogazione e produzione multimediale.
