Tour at Palazzo del Quirinale

Great Events

Visits suspended

The Palace of the Quirinal rises on a hill considered salubrious because of its altitude, which is the reason why this part of the city housed residential areas, public and sacred buildings since the ancient times.

The Temple of the god Quirinus, that gave its name to the hill, was built here in the 4th century b.C. as well as the Temple of Salus, the goddess of health,  where ceremonies for the wellbeing of the state were held. The most imposing presences here in the Roman period were without any doubt the Baths of Constantine and the Temple of Serapis, built by Caracalla in 217 A.D. From the temple come the two groups of statues representing Castor and Pollux with their horses. Having these amazing sculptures always been here, the hill started being referred to as "Monte Cavallo" (the hill of horses).

The Quirinal Palace, placed on the highest of the seven hills of Rome, is now not only the official seat of the President of the Italian Republic and point of reference of the democratic life of this nation, but also a museum, open to citizens of the world to see a great amount of artworks, furniture, tapestries, decorations and architecture of high quality and historic importance, covering from the Renaissance to the 20th century, including Napoleon's age and the Savoy Kingdom.
