Museums

Facing onto the Grand Canal, the Museo di Storia Naturale is located in the splendid Fontego dei Turchi. The building, constructed in the thirteenth century and commissioned by Giacomo Palmieri, was the commercial headquarters of the merchant Turks in Venice from 1621 to 1838. In 1860, it was completely restructured, inspired by the original palazzo, and in 1923 it became the seat of the Museo di Storia Naturale.
The current exhibition design engages visitors in an experience that makes them the active protagonists of a journey: the original, clear and captivating presentation invites young and old to live the discovery of nature. From the rooms dedicated to the world of palaeontology, where fossils mark the traces of a fascinating trip through time, one moves to a section that tells the story of evolution through natural history collecting, the adventures of the Venetian explorers and the birth of scientific museology. From the brand-new multimedia rooms dedicated to biodiversity and the complexity of survival strategies on land to the aquarium of the tegnùe (natural rocky outcrops in the Gulf of Venice) and to the gallery of cetaceans where one finds the enormous skeletons of a finback and a sperm whale.
