SANTA MARIA ANTIQUA BETWEEN ROME AND BISANZIO

Roma
Exhibitions

On December 8th, and until March 19th, 2017 the exhibition "Santa Maria Antiqua in Rome and Byzantium" is going to be open again. The works that had enriched the path inside the church, the late antique jewel set in the Roman Forum in an almost hidden location, were returned to the lenders. Visitors will still find all the multimedia insights that contributed largely to the success of the exhibition in previous months.

The multimedia systems (projections, video, lighting effects) are designed with a clear educational purpose, in order to help the understanding of a fascinating monument very complicated. Their effect was also to make the visit more immersive without being too intrusive in a context in which architecture and the late-ancient painting come to their summits .

It is possible to visit the exhibition inside the church Santa Maria Antiqua, the cathedral in the Roman Forum discovery in 1900 on the slopes of the Palatine and reopened to the public after 30 years.

The church has on its walls a heritage of paintings never seen in the Christian world of the first millennium, dating from the sixth to the ninth century.

It remains an exceptional example in the development of not only Roman painting, but of all the contemporary greek byzantine world: an artistic heritage of pictures destroyed by the iconoclastic fury in the Eastern world, but maintained and retained by the Western world.

  • Between Rome and Byzantium

The exhibition is "show" of the monument itself, an exceptional testimony to the development of the painting of Roman and greek high medieval Byzantine world: iconoclasm, in fact, wiped out in much of the East of sacred images.

The building, with its paintings, has played a central role in the Christianization of the post-classical Roman Forum and the relationship of Rome with Byzantium and its culture.

Decorative phases are witnessed by the "palimpsest”, it is located in the vicinity of the apse and in it six layers of paint can be identified: from the IV-V to the VIII century after Christ.

There are a painted plaster of the pay period and an image of th Vergin Mary enthroned with the Child adored by an angel that dates back to the foundation of the church.

The cycle dedicated to the martyrdom of Saints Quirico and Juliette is particularly well preserved, it decorates Theodotus chapel, dating from the pontificate of Pope Zacharias (741-752).

  • The technologies

The complex pictorial stratification is made more readable through the digital technology: the video-mapping, used for the first time in the Roman Forum, returns the missing parts of the decorations of the two chapels on the sides of the presbytery.

The innovative light mapping, isolates the different layers of the "palimpsest”, while the multimedia equipment narrate the history of the building.
