Stabiae played an important strategic and commercial role already in the archaic age (VIII century B.C.).  The greatest population build-up must be placed between Silla's destruction of the city (89 B.C.) and the eruption of Vesuvius. In this period, on the brow of Varano hill rose numerous villas on panoramic sites, mainly built for residential purposes, with vast living quarters, baths structures, porticoes and splendidly decorated nymphaeums. Villa San Marco, so called for its nearness to a chapel dedicated to Saint Mark, was explored in the Bourbon period, and brought to light in the 1950s. The villa conserves its structures intact, and testifies to life in luxury during the Roman age.  The atrium has an elegant Corinthian roof supported by columns, around which are sited the lararium, the cubicles and the tablinum. Testimonies of an eclectic and very original taste are the baths quarter, the monumental swimming pool with exhedra and ambulatories, the hospitalia finely decorated with frescoes, and the unique upper garden surrounded by tortile columns. Excavated during the Bourbon epoch, Villa Arianna presents features of originality and a peculiar layout, heavily conditioned by the trend of the plateau on which it stands. The surviving elements of the villa include the triclinium with paintings referring to the myth of Ariadne, and the atrium from which elegant little paintings of figures have been detached, such as that of the Flora. The fresco decorative apparatus, including frequent subjects of miniatures, reveals a finely executed and skilful workmanship.
