Archaeological sites

Among the Vesuvian archaeological localities that were buried by the dramatic eruption of 70 A.D., Oplontis is probably the one to offer the most significant monumental testimonies of the Pompeian suburb. The building complex of the Roman age, which was discovered as of the Bourbon epoch in the modern city of Torre Annunziata, is referable to a veritable peripheral urban centre under the administrative jurisdiction of Pompeii, and characterised by the presence of villas and public buildings, connected by streets. Oplontis is particularly characterised by the presence of two monumental buildings which served different purposes:  the so-called Villa of Poppea, a grandiose and luxurious complex of a residential nature, and the Villa of Crassius Tertius, presently closed to the public, which was an establishment whose activity centred on processing agricultural produce. The Villa of Poppea, brought to light between 1964 and 1984, constitutes the most classic example of an otium villa, erected near the coast, which also for the healthy climate enabled its residents to fortify mind and body far from the chaotic life of the capital. Embellished by spectacular pictorial decorations in the II Pompeian style and valuable adornments including the sculptures of white marble that decorated its gardens and swimming pool, the building presents the typical features of the patrician residence. Attributed to Nero's wife Poppea on the basis of material evidence referring to the empress, the villa in any event must have been part of the many properties the imperial family owned on the coast of Campania.
