Archaeological sites

Discovered in 1934, this structure dedicated to the cult of Mithras was built over a more ancient construction. Today it is located under the Church of Saint Prisca which itself was probably built on this site as Christians sought to wipe out the surviving pagan cult  of the god Mithras. The sanctuary is rectangular in shape with a barrel-vault and before the entrance it has two alcoves in which two torch-bearing statues of Cautes and Cautopates were originally located. The niche on the back wall presents the typical  "speleum", the cave where  the god was supposedly born. In this speleum there is an unusual representation of the god Saturn lying down, his body made of a vase and stucco. The walls are decorated with frescoes representing the various  initiation phases into the cult of Mithras.  For each one of the seven phases, there is a corresponding planet.
