Museums

The Museo Ebraico in Venice is a diffuse museum, not simply an exhibition space but an urban architectural and museum complex unique of its kind. What was the first Jewish ghetto in Europe is now a lively, much-visited district. Its Jewish religious and administrative institutions are still active today as are the five synagogues founded between the sixteenth and seventeenth century by diverse ethnic groups in the city. Through tours that depart hourly, one can visit three of the old synagogues spread between the Ghetto Vecchio and the Ghetto Nuovo, led by specialised guides. These guided tours introduce the history of the Venetian Jewish quarter, which gave origin to the term ghetto, and that of the Jews in Venice. Visiting the synagogues lays the foundations for learning more about the thousands-of-years-old Jewish culture. The museum houses valuable religious objects, holy furnishings, nuptial contracts, silver pieces of various types and origins, and fascinating exemplars of Jewish ritual paraphernalia. A new area, in the course of installation but already open to the public, is devoted to the history and culture of Venetian Jews. Inside the building, one can visit a Sukkak created in 1821 for the festival of the “Capanne”. In the campo one can admire the Holocaust Monuments designed by Arbit Blatas. Inside the museum, one finds “Alef, la libreria del Ghetto” (Alef, the Jewish Ghetto Bookshop), the best-stocked specialised Jewish bookstore in Italy.
