The Severian Arches are an archaeological evidence of the utmost importance: built in a time between Domitian's and Maxentius' reign, these functional pieces of architecture stand as a testimony of the Roman's ability as engineers and their incredible capacity to overcome any difficulty imposed by the nature of the landscape they intervened on in order to build complex and luxurious structures. The very high and narrow arches form a system distributed along two tiers, following a well known model used mainly for aqueducts and bridges. These arches were meant to enlarged the building space offered by the Palatine hilltop and therefore hold the further development of the imperial residence that occupied it. From the top of these structures it is today possible to enjoy a breathtaking view on the ancient and modern Rome. Specifically, you can admire the imperial podium, and its access hallway, that overlooked the Circus Maximus, built under Domitian and enlarged by Maxentius. You can also see the so-called "Stadium", designed by the same architect Rabirius who had rebuilt the Temple of Jupiter on the Capitol Hill. The place, already so intriguing, during the sunset gets tainted by beams and shadows that give it a magical sense of being suspended in time.
