Prato
Exhibitions

This is an exhibition route that touches the history of the seven great structures in the Tuscan service, in other words, the Florentine hospitals of Santa Maria Nuova, San Giovanni di Dio and the Innocenti, Santa Maria del- la Scala in Siena, the Misericordia e Dolce of Prato, the Santa Chiara of Pisa and the Ceppo of Pistoia. Ancient hospital complexes that grew up in Tuscany and were characterised by strong spiritual values concerning healthcare combined with a deep religious fervour; they often acquired such a great importance that they themselves became important politi- cal actors, owners of property and purchasers of priceless works of art.

This selection of art works from the seven hospitals therefore shows the importance of the history of these health structures in Tuscany and their functions, which ranged from hosting the poor and the pilgrims, treating the sick and taking in abandoned children. Above all it reveals the great attention given to spiritual redemption, which was considered a fundamental step in the recovery of physical heath.
