If Catherine of Siena was Italy’s greatest prophetess, then Angela of Foligno was its greatest religious mystic. The account of her experience of God between 1291 and 1296 – known as the ‘Memorial’ – is without doubt one of the masterpieces of western mysticism, on the same level as the works by Hildegard of Bingen, Teresa of Avila or Teresa of Lisieux. The works on show here give visitors a rare opportunity to see a small but perfectly formed anthology of the best examples of late medieval Umbrian art:   seven show the Crucifixion, one the Lamentation, and two show the Deposition from the Cross. The exhibition also offers a precious chance to see – together for the first time – the oldest medieval manuscripts of the Liber (collected works) of Blessed Angela of Foligno, dating back to between the early 14th and 15th centuries. Despite their modest, even ordinary appearance (insofar as such a definition can be applied to such a unique artefact as a medieval manuscript), the manuscripts really represent the ‘ineffable’ part of the exhibition evoked in its title.
